If you need to make a change to your 2022, 2023, or 2024 accepted return, you must file an amended return using the Form 1040-X. Prior year amended returns must be filed by mail.
Prepare your 1040-X directly through your account:
If your 2022, 2023, or 2024 return was accepted through the program and you need to prepare an amended return, you may be able to do so directly through your account.
To begin preparing your prior year 1040-X after your return has been accepted, please login to your account and follow the steps below.
- From the Tax Home, use the three dots to select View under the desired tax year within the Tax Returns section at the bottom
- "Access Return"
- To complete the amended return, select the option "Amended Return 20XX" located on the navigation bar on the left hand side of the program.
- Next screen will show important information regarding the Form 1040-X. If you see a message that states the 1040-X is not available, you will not be able to proceed with preparing it electronically. See the information provided below.
- If you are able to proceed, read the information and click "Continue".
- The fee to prepare the prior year amended return within the program is $42. The amended tax return has a check box acknowledgement stating that the amended return is non-refundable.
- The program will then walk you through preparing your amended return with a detailed list of instructions.
- Once the amended return is completed, view return pdf, then print the amended return and mail it to the IRS and/or state taxing authority.
- Mailing addresses for the federal amended return can be found by clicking here. The state amended return generally has the mailing address listed on the return.
- Do not forget to sign your amended return after printing.
How else can I prepare an amended return?
The 1040-X Form is also available at the IRS website. The IRS does not accept prior year amended returns electronically. This type of return must be mailed to the IRS service center that services your area. Mailing address information can be found on the IRS website.
