If you need to correct information on a tax return that has already been accepted by the IRS, you'll need to file an amended return using Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
For tax years 2022, 2023, and 2024, amended returns prepared through our program must be printed and mailed to the IRS and, if applicable, your state tax agency.
How to Prepare a Prior Year Amended Return in Your Account
If your 2022, 2023, or 2024 return was accepted through the program and you need to prepare an amended return, you may be able to do so directly through your account.
To begin preparing your prior year 1040-X after your return has been accepted, please login to your account and follow the steps below.
If your original 2022, 2023, or 2024 return was filed and accepted through our program, you may be able to prepare your Form 1040-X directly from your account.
Follow these steps:
- Sign in to your account.
- From the Tax Home page, scroll to the Tax Returns section.
- Select the three-dot menu next to the tax year you want to amend and choose View.
- Select Access Return.
- From the navigation menu on the left, choose Amended Return 20XX for the year you're correcting.
-
Review the information on the next screen.
- If you see a message indicating that Form 1040-X is unavailable, electronic preparation through the program is not available for that return year.
- In that case, you may need to complete Form 1040-X manually using IRS forms and instructions.
- If the option is available, read the instructions and select Continue.
- The program will guide you through the amendment process step by step.
- A $42 fee applies to prepare a prior year amended return through the program. The amended return fee is nonrefundable and requires acknowledgment before you continue.
- When your amendment is complete, download or view the PDF, print the amended return, and mail it to the IRS and any applicable state tax authority.
- Don't forget to sign the amended return before mailing it.
Where Do I Mail Form 1040-X?
The mailing address for your federal amended return depends on where you live and whether you're including a payment. You can find the correct IRS mailing address in the Form 1040-X instructions or on the IRS website.
State amended return mailing addresses are typically listed on the state amendment form itself.
How else can I prepare an amended return?
The 1040-X Form is also available at the IRS website. The IRS does not accept prior year amended returns electronically. This type of return must be mailed to the IRS service center that services your area. Mailing address information can be found on the IRS website.
