If your tax return has already been filed and accepted and you later discover that information was missing or reported incorrectly, you will need to file an amended tax return. An amended return allows you to correct income, deductions, credits, withholding, filing status, or other information on a previously accepted federal and/or state tax return.
How to Amend Your Tax Return
Amend a Current-Year Return
- Log in to your account and open your current-year tax return.
- From the left navigation menu, select "2025 Amended Return."
- Review the original return information displayed in the amended return section.
- Return to the federal or state return sections and make the necessary corrections.
- Complete the amended return steps, including your explanation of changes.
- Print or e-file your amended federal return, if eligible.
Amend a Prior-Year Return
- Go to My Account and access the tax year you want to amend.
- Select "20XX Amended Return" from the left navigation menu.
- Follow the amended return process to review original information and make corrections.
- Complete the required explanation and filing steps.
- Prior year amended returns cannot be e-filed.
Review Your Original Return Information
Before making any changes, verify that the information shown in the amended return matches the most recently accepted return.
If your original return was filed using the same account, the information will generally be carried forward automatically. However, you should carefully review all amounts for accuracy.
Pay particular attention to:
- Any refund received from the IRS or state tax agency
- Any tax balance paid after filing
- Adjustments previously made by the IRS or state agency
Accurate original return information is essential to ensure the amended return calculates correctly.
Missing Original Return Information
You may need to manually enter original return information if:
- Your original return was filed with another provider, or
- You are filing a second amended return for the same tax year.
The program provides line references to help you enter the correct amounts from your originally filed return.
Make Corrections to Your Federal Return
After reviewing the original return information:
- Return to the Federal section of the program.
- Add, edit, or remove information as needed.
- The changes will automatically update your amended return.
- Return to the Amended Return menu to continue the amendment process.
Create an Amended State Return
If you need to amend your state return:
- Select Create Amended State Return.
- Choose the state you want to amend and select Edit Amended.
- Open the state return and locate the Amended Return section.
- Answer Yes when asked if you want to complete an amended return.
- Review the original state information that was carried over automatically.
- Make the necessary corrections and continue through the state return.
- State amended returns cannot be e-filed.
Some states require an explanation of changes. If prompted, provide a brief explanation of why the return is being amended.
Provide an Explanation for the Changes
Both the IRS and most state tax agencies require taxpayers to explain why they are filing an amended return.
Enter a concise description of the corrections made, such as:
- Added a missing W-2
- Corrected income information
- Claimed a missed tax credit
- Updated filing status
File Your Amended Return
Federal Amended Return
The IRS allows many amended federal returns to be filed electronically.
To e-file:
- Open the Amended Return section.
- Select Continue.
- Choose E-file My Return Online and follow the prompts.
State Amended Return
State amended returns must be printed and mailed to the state tax authority.
If mailing a state amended return, include any required supporting documentation and sign the return before mailing.
Review and Print Your Amended Return
If you are unable to e-file the amended return, you can print it after completing your corrections:
- Go to Amended Return > Print Amended Return.
- Review the amended forms carefully.
- Save or print a copy for your records.
Important: The refund estimator displayed during preparation may not represent the actual amended refund or balance due. Review the finalized amended return forms for the official amended calculation.
Amended Return Fee
The amended return fee is $42, which includes both federal and state amended return preparation.
Important:
- The fee is nonrefundable.
- If the original return was not filed through our software, the original filing fee may also apply.
