If you want to file just a federal return, and not file a state return(s), you need to make sure that your state return(s) are not selected for electronic filing at the time of filing your return.
- Click on the "E-file" tab located on the navigation bar.
- Click on "Skip Now / File Later" for each state return you do not wish to electronically file at this time.
- Continue through the e-file process until you have received confirmation that your return has been submitted.
If you have already started the e-file process, simply click Cancel and return to the Main Menu or you can restart the e-file process.
How do I remove the charge for the State return if I am not filing it now?
If the state return is created in the account, it will be included in the fees when you attempt to file or print the return. If you pay for the state return along with the federal return, you can elect to file the state return at a later time.
If you do not wish to pay for the state return when filing your federal return, you will need to remove (delete) it from the account.

If you remove the state return, you will have to add the state return back when and if you decide to file it later. The state fees will be added when you print or e-file the state return.
