If you have one or more dependents that attend Kindergarten through 12th grade in an accredited Iowa school, you can take a credit for each dependent for amounts paid tuition or expenses for textbooks.
Calculating the Credit
The Tuition and Textbook Credit for grades K-12 is equal to 25% of eligible expenses up to $500 per dependent claimed on the tax return. The amount entered will not be prorated, you must prorate the amount before inputting. If you did not claim the dependent you cannot claim the expenses.
Keep records of your calculation, showing the name of each dependent, school(s) attended or qualifications for private instruction, and an itemized list of qualifying expenses.
