Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, is issued by eligible educational institutions to report qualified education expenses and certain scholarships or grants received during the tax year.
You may need the information from Form 1098-T when claiming an education tax benefit, such as the American Opportunity Credit (AOTC) or the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC), on your 2026 federal income tax return (filed in 2027).
Beginning with tax year 2018 and continuing through 2026, schools generally report the amount of qualified tuition and related expenses that were paid during the year.
Where to Find Important Information on Form 1098-T
Here are the most commonly used boxes when preparing your tax return:
- Box 1: Reports qualified tuition and related expenses paid during the tax year.
- Box 5: Reports scholarships and grants received during the year.
