Several factors determine if you are required to file a tax return - even if you are a dependent on someone else's return. In tax year 2018, single dependents will need to file a return if you have:
- Earned income more than $12,000
- Unearned income more than $1,050
- Earned and unearned income together total more than the larger of (1) $1,050, or (2) total earned income (up to $12,000) plus $350
Married dependents or dependents over age 65, please refer to the IRS instructions for Form 1040 to determine if you need to file a return.
