Several factors determine if you are required to file a tax return - even if you are a dependent on someone else's return. In tax year 2020, single dependents will need to file a return if you have:
- Earned income more than $12,400
- Unearned income more than $1,100
- Total gross income was more than the larger of (1) $1,100, or (2) total earned income (up to $12,050) plus $350
Married dependents or dependents over age 65, please refer to the IRS instructions for Form 1040 to determine if you need to file a return.
