Several factors determine if you are required to file a tax return - even if you are a dependent on someone else's return. In tax year 2023, single dependents will need to file a return if you have:
- Earned income more than $13,850
- Unearned income more than $1,250
- Total gross income was more than the larger of (1) $1,250, or (2) total earned income (up to $13,850) plus $400
What if my dependent is married or over the age of 65?
Married dependents or dependents over age 65, please refer to the IRS instructions for Form 1040 to determine if you need to file a return.
