You may want to apply all or a part of your current tax refund to your return next year if:
- Your refund amount is small
- Your refund is larger than normal
- It is getting close to the filing deadline and you pay estimated taxes
Where do I enter my refund amount applied from last year?
If you elected to have all or a portion of your refund amount from your prior year return applied to the current year, you will need to enter the information into the program to calculate your return correctly.
- Federal
- Payments & Estimates
- Federal (or State) Estimated Tax Payments
- Amount Applied from Prior Year Refund
Where do I indicate I want to apply a portion of my refund to next year?
That depends on if it is for the State or IRS.
State:
- State
- Payments
- Indicate the amount of state refund that you would like to apply to your next year state taxes
Federal:
- Federal
- Payments & Estimates
- Apply Overpayment to Next Year's Taxes
- Amount of Overpayment to apply to next year
Can I amend the return to claim a refund instead?
If you choose to have your refund applied to your next year's estimated tax amount, you cannot change your mind and have it refunded to you after the due date of the return.
