Once your federal or state tax return has been accepted, you can print a copy or save it as a PDF on your computer, external hard drive, or USB drive. Keeping a copy of your accepted return is a smart way to store important tax records and make future filing easier.
How to Print or Save Your Accepted Tax Return
After your return has been accepted, follow these steps:
- Sign in to your account.
- From the Tax Home page, select Print.
- Choose Print Federal or Print State.
- Your accepted return will open as a PDF file.
The PDF includes Form 1040 along with any supporting schedules and worksheets associated with your return.
Printing Your Tax Return
Once the PDF opens:
- Click the printer icon, or
- Press Ctrl + P on your keyboard
Then select your printer and print a copy of your return.
Saving Your Tax Return as a PDF
To save a digital copy:
- Click the save icon in the PDF viewer, or
- Press Ctrl + S on your keyboard
Choose a location on your computer, external drive, or USB drive, then save the file.
Saving a PDF copy makes it easy to access your return later if you need it for loan applications, financial aid, tax planning, or recordkeeping.
How to Email a Copy of Your Tax Return
If you need to send your return to yourself, a tax professional, or another trusted recipient, save the PDF first and then attach it to an email.
Steps to Email Your Return
- Open your accepted return as a PDF.
- Save the file to your computer.
- Open your email application.
- Create a new email.
- Attach the saved PDF.
- Send the email to the intended recipient.
⚠️ Security Tip: Tax returns contain sensitive personal information. Only email your return to trusted recipients and use secure email whenever possible.
How to Access Your Original Return After Starting an Amendment
If you've started an amended return, your original accepted return is still available for viewing and printing.
To access the original accepted return:
- Go to the Tax Home page.
- Select Print and open the original accepted return.
- Print or save a copy for your records.
Keep in mind that the Review > Summary section reflects your current amended return information, not the original return.
Important Note: If you need to revert to the original return, you must manually undo any changes made during the amendment process.
