Most people file both the state and federal returns at the same time.
How to verify state return was filed?
You can verify that your State Return has been submitted by logging into your account. On the "My Account" page, you will see a tab that says "Return Status". Here you will see a listing of your federal and state returns. Beside your state return listing(s) you will see three status:
- Created
- E-filed
- Status is either Rejected or Accepted.
If your state return is showing as E-filed it was submitted and we are waiting for a notification of acceptance or rejection.
Once your Federal Return has been accepted by the IRS, the IRS will transmit your State Return to the state for processing. Your State Status will be displayed once we receive an acknowledgement(s) from the state (generally within 5 days from the time the federal return has been accepted.)
What if the federal return is rejected?
When you file your federal return and your state return together, the state requires that the IRS accept the federal return before they will look at the state return. This is because any changes that are required for your federal return will often affect the results of the state return. So, when your federal return was rejected, your state return did not get transmitted.
You will need to correct the federal return and then resubmit both returns.
