Most states will give you an automatic 6-month extension of time to file, if an extension was filed for the Federal return. While other states will give you an automatic extension without filing one for your Federal return.
Amounts due must be paid by the filing deadline to avoid late payments and penalties. Visit your state website for more information on the payment amount required with the extension.
The following states require that you file for a state extension (even if you filed a federal extension) if you cannot file your return by the state’s deadline (October 15, 2021):
- Arizona
- Delaware
- District of Columbia
- Indiana
- New York
- North Carolina
- Oklahoma
- Vermont
