If you do not have access to your self-select PIN you created in a prior year or if you do not have your federal adjusted gross income from your previous year return, you will have to paper file the return instead.
The Taxpayer/Spouse PIN is used to electronically sign your tax return and it is required when electronically filing. This is a unique 5 digit number which does not begin with "0" that you create. Once created, this number will become next year's Prior Year PIN number and be used to verify your signature on next year's return.
If this is your first return that you have filed or if you did not file a return in the previous year, your prior year PIN will be left blank and your Prior Year AGI will be "$0".
When you use the same account (username) each year, the 5 digit PIN you created for your current return (signature) will automatically carry forward to your next year's return as the Prior Year PIN. Your Prior Year AGI will also carry forward.
