To E-file your tax return you must verify your identity with your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from your prior year tax return. If you do not have your prior-year tax return, you may visit the IRS website and use the Get Transcript tool to obtain the AGI amount. The AGI amount is listed on Line 11 of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 1040 Form.
The latest IRS updates indicate their preferred form of electronic signature is the prior year Adjusted Gross Income. Additionally, the IRS will allow you to sign your return electronically using your prior year self-select PIN. However, you will only have a prior year self-select PIN if you electronically filed your prior year return. If you are unable to supply the IRS with the prior year AGI amount or self-select PIN, you can still print, sign, and mail your return.
What if I don't know my AGI amount?
To get your 2023 AGI amount, you can:
- Visit the IRS website and get a transcript of the 2023 return
- Visit the preparer you used last year and get a copy of the 2023 return (Line 11)
- Review you printed copy of your 2023 1040 Form for the amount listed on line 11
- If you did not electronically file the 2023 return, use $0 as the AGI amount
- If you did not file before October 15th, 2024, use $0 as the AGI amount
What does it mean "Create a Self-Select PIN for this year" ?
Please create a 5 digit PIN to use to file your return next year.
- The 5 digit PIN cannot begin with a zero.
- You can use the same number as you did this year (If it does not begin with a zero).
- If you are filing a married filing joint return, you must both create a PIN. The PIN number can be the same.
- We will carry the PIN to your return next year if you file an accepted return and use the same Username.
