You must first meet ALL the following qualifications in order to apply for this Property Tax Credit. The qualifications are as follows:
- You must be 65 years of age or older and/or disabled.
- You must have been domiciled in Rhode Island for all of the tax year.
- Your household income must have been $39,275 or less.
- You had to have lived in a household or rented a home that was subject to property taxes.
- You must be caught up and current with all property tax and rent payments due on your homestead for all previous years and current year.
Who may claim this credit?
If ALL of the qualifications are met, only one person in your household may claim the credit. If there are multiple individuals living in the same household, all income must but be added and considered when figuring the household income. As long as all income combined is less than $39,275, one person may claim this credit.
Are there limitations to this credit?
A claim for relief shall not include any taxes or rent paid with public assistance monies. The most credit allowed for the taxable year is $675. If more than one person owns the property, the credit will be split among the owners.
If you qualify, your property tax relief credit will decrease any income tax due or increase any income tax refund. Please note that even if you file an extension to file your Rhode Island return, it does not extend your time to file the Form RI-1040H for the Property Tax Relief Credit. Form RI-1040H must be filed by April 15th, 2025 to qualify for the Rhode Island Property Tax Relief Credit.
