First time filers will not have an Illinois filing PIN. However, with a valid Illinois Driver's License or Illinois State Identification Card, you can still e-file your Illinois return. Married filing joint filers will be required to enter valid Driver's License or State ID information for the spouse as well.
Once a return is successfully filed with Illinois, an eight digit IL-PIN will be issued.
If you have successfully filed an Illinois return in a prior year, visit IL-PIN inquiry or call 800-732-8866 to see if an IL-PIN has been issued to you.
What if I do not have a valid Illinois Driver's license or State ID?
If you do not have a valid DL or State ID and you have not been issued an Illinois e-filing PIN, you will not be able to electronically file your IL State return. The return must be printed, signed, and mailed to the State for processing. This should allow you to be issued an IL e-filing PIN for filing next year's return.
Please note: If this is the first year you are filing a Form IL-1040, your refund will be issued as a paper check.
