As of 2018, Primary Mortgage Insurance is no longer allowed as an itemized deduction on your individual tax return.
For tax years prior to 2018, the primary mortgage insurance could be claimed on your return. However, if you did not receive a 1098 form, you would need to get verification on the amount that was deductible.
Examples of mortgage insurance issuers include:
- the Department of Veterans Affairs,
- the Federal Housing Administration
- the Rural Housing Service
Mortgage insurance provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Rural Housing Service is commonly known as a funding fee and guarantee fee respectively.
