The W-2 verification code, sometimes referred to as a control number, is an optional code that may appear on certain Forms W-2. It was used as part of an IRS pilot program designed to help prevent tax fraud and identity theft.
For tax year 2026 returns (filed in 2027), you are not required to enter this code when preparing your return. Your tax return can be filed even if the field is blank or the code is not entered.
Where Can I Find the Verification Code?
If your employer includes a verification code, it will generally appear in Box 9 of Form W-2.
Keep in mind:
- Many Forms W-2 have a blank Box 9.
- Some Forms W-2 do not include Box 9 at all.
- Neither situation affects your ability to file your tax return.
If your W-2 does not contain a verification code, simply continue entering the rest of the form as usual.
Do I Need to Enter the Verification Code?
No. The verification code is not required when entering your W-2 information in the program.
Whether the code is:
- Missing
- Left blank
- Entered incorrectly
- Not included on your W-2
you can still complete and e-file your return.
What Did Verification Codes Look Like?
On Forms W-2 that included a verification code, the code typically consisted of four groups of four characters separated by hyphens, such as:

- Valid characters were limited to letters A through F and numbers 0 through 9.
- Verification codes appeared on Copy B (Federal Copy) and Copy C (Employee Copy) of Form W-2.
- Not all employees received a verification code.
What If My W-2 Has a Blank Box 9?
A blank Box 9 is normal and does not indicate a problem with your W-2. Simply leave the verification code field empty and continue entering the remaining information from your form.
