As part of the signature process when filing a return electronically, the IRS requires an identifying piece of information. This could be your prior year's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or your prior year's Self-Select PIN number that you created if you E-filed your prior year return. This article will focus on finding your AGI number.
What line is AGI on 1040?
Your AGI is listed on line 11 of your 2022-2024 Form 1040s.
Where can I find my prior year return AGI?
If you e-filed your prior year tax return using TaxSlayer, you can access your prior year return from the Account page. Log in to your account, scroll down to the Prior Year Returns section, and select Access Return for prior year. Then select Summary/Print to view the PDF to see line 11 for the AGI amount.
What if I don't have a copy of my prior year's return?
No problem. Click here to obtain a transcript of your prior year return. You will need the AGI amount as reported on the return. The AGI amount for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 tax returns on Form 1040 is listed on line 11.
What if I am Married Filing Jointly?
For most Married Filing Joint filers who filed a joint return last year, your prior year AGI will be the same for both taxpayers, even if one did not work.
What if you did NOT file a federal tax return last year, filed by mail last year, or filed after October 15th?
Select 'No' when asked if you filed a return last year. The program will automatically enter '0' for your Prior Year AGI, since the IRS does not have an amount listed in its database.
What if I am under 16 years of age or filing for the first time?
If you are under 16 years of age and/or filing for the first time, you will be required to print, sign, and mail the return to the IRS. The IRS mailing address can be found here, listed by your state of residence.
