As part of the signature process when filing a return electronically, the IRS requires an identifying piece of information. This could be your prior year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), prior year PIN number that you created on your prior year return, or the IRS E-filing PIN number (Taxpayer issued IRS PIN).
What is my AGI?
Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is your gross income minus certain deductions or adjustments allowed by the IRS. These deductions are sometimes called "above-the-line" deductions because they are subtracted before calculating taxable income and before taking the standard or itemized deduction.
How do I find my AGI from last year?
If you do not have a copy of your prior year tax return, you may click here to obtain a transcript of your prior year return through the IRS website. If you do have a copy of your prior year return, you will find the AGI on the Form 1040, line 11.
What do I enter for the AGI if I am filing a Married Filing Joint Return?
For most Married Filing Joint filers who filed a joint return last year, your prior year AGI will be the same for both taxpayers, even if one did not work.
If you were not married last year, you will each enter your individual AGI amounts from your separate returns. To help decide what AGI to use as a married couple, please see our KB article on the subject.
What do I enter for my AGI if I did not file a prior year return or filed after the October 15th deadline?
If you did not file a federal tax return last year or filed after October 15th, Select 'No' when asked if you filed a return last year. Our program will automatically enter '0' for your Prior Year AGI amount as the IRS does not have an amount listed in their database.
What do I enter for my AGI if I am under 16 years of age or a first time filer?
If you are under 16 years of age and filing for the first time, you will be required to print, sign, and mail the return to the IRS. IRS mailing address can be found here listed by your state and form.
