There are several different versions of Form 1098, and each one is reported differently on your tax return. Before entering the form, check the form number printed in the upper-right corner to confirm which type you received.
Use the instructions below for your specific Form 1098.
Form 1098-C: Vehicle, Boat, or Airplane Donation
If you donated a vehicle, boat, or airplane to a qualified charity and received Form 1098-C, enter the donation as a non-cash charitable contribution.
- Go to Federal.
- Select Deductions > Select My Forms.
- Choose Itemized Deductions.
- Select Donations to Charity.
- Choose Non-Cash Donations.
- Select My non-cash donations equal $500 or more.
- From the Category drop-down menu, select Vehicles, Boats, Planes, etc.
- Enter the required donation details.
- At the bottom of the page, check the box indicating you received Form 1098-C, then complete the additional form information.
Form 1098-E: Student Loan Interest Statement
Form 1098-E reports interest you paid on qualified student loans during the tax year. If you qualify, this interest may be deductible as an adjustment to income.
To enter Form 1098-E:
- Go to Federal.
- Select Deductions > Select My Forms.
- Choose Adjustments to Income.
- Select Student Loan Interest.
- Enter the information shown on your Form 1098-E.
Form 1098-MA: Mortgage Assistance Payments
Form 1098-MA is provided for informational purposes only.
You do not report mortgage assistance payments as taxable income, and the information from Form 1098-MA is generally not entered on your tax return.
Form 1098-T: Tuition Statement
Form 1098-T is used to determine eligibility for education tax benefits, such as education credits.
To enter Form 1098-T:
- Go to Federal.
- Select Deductions > Select My Forms.
- Choose Credits.
- Select Education Credits.
- Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.
Keep any supporting education records, such as tuition statements and receipts for qualified expenses, with your tax documents.
Form 1098: Mortgage Interest Statement
Mortgage interest reported on Form 1098 may be deductible, depending on how the property was used during the year.
Main Home
If the mortgage interest is for your primary residence, enter it as an itemized deduction.
- Go to Federal.
- Select Deductions > Select My Forms.
- Choose Itemized Deductions.
- Select Mortgage Interest and Expenses.
- Enter the information from your Form 1098.
Rental Property
If the mortgage interest relates to a rental property, report it as a rental expense on Schedule E.
- Go to Federal.
- Select Income > Select My Forms.
- Choose Profit or Loss from Rentals and Royalties.
- Select Expenses.
- Enter the amount under Mortgage Interest.
Important Note About Mortgage Interest
Your mortgage interest deduction may be limited based on factors such as the amount of mortgage debt secured by the property and when the loan was originated. Be sure to enter all information exactly as it appears on your Form 1098 so the program can determine whether any limitations apply.
By identifying which Form 1098 you received and following the correct entry path, you can make sure the information is reported properly on your 2026 tax return.
