In December 2024, the IRS announced they would be sending special payments to qualified taxpayers who were eligible to claim the third stimulus payment on their 2021 return; but did not.
Am I eligible?
The IRS has defined "qualified taxpayers" as those who filed a 2021 tax return but left the data field for the Recovery Rebate Credit blank, or filled out $0 when the individual was eligible to receive the credit.
What if I didn't file a 2021 return?
If you have not filed a 2021 return, you have until April 15, 2025 to file your 2021 return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for your missing stimulus payment.
How much will I receive from the payment?
The payment amount depends on your income and dependents. Each eligible individual can receive up to $1,400 from the payment. To receive the full amount of $1,400, your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) must be less than:
- $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
- $112,500 if filing as head of household or
- $75,000 for all others.
If your AGI is greater than the amounts listed above, your payment will be reduced.
When will I receive the payment?
The IRS has stated that they will begin sending the payments in December 2024 and expects the payments to be delivered by the end of January 2025.
How will I receive the payment?
The IRS will send you the payment based off your information on file. If the IRS has direct deposit information from your 2023 return, they will direct deposit your payment into that account. If the bank account on file (2023 return) was closed, taxpayers do not need to take any action. The bank will return the payment to the IRS and the refund will be reissued to the address of record. If the IRS doesn't have your direct deposit information, they will mail the payment.
