Beginning with rent paid in tax year 2024, renters can claim a credit by completing Schedule M1RENT, with their Minnesota State Return. Previously renter's would complete Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter's Property Tax Refund; however, renter's should not complete Form M1PR to claim their Renter's Credit starting with tax year 2024. Additionally, you must provide your Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) information when completing your return like you would with the previous M1PR.

When do I receive my property tax refund?
If you claim the Renter's Credit on your Minnesota return, you will not receive an extra refund. The Renter's Credit is now included with your state return's calculations. If you are due a refund from MN, your Renter's Credit will be apart of it.
If you claim a Minnesota property tax refund using the M1PR, you can track the status of your refund using Minnesota's Where's My Refund tool, simply change the return type to "property tax."
