In most cases, filing electronically is the fastest and easiest way to submit your tax return. However, once the IRS closes electronic filing for the tax season, you'll need to print and mail your return instead.
When Is Paper Filing Required?
The IRS e-file deadline generally ends when the tax filing season closes, including for taxpayers who received an extension. For 2026 tax returns filed in 2027, taxpayers who receive an extension typically have until October 15, 2027, to e-file. To file after that date, you'll need to print, sign, and mail your federal and state tax returns.
Things to Know Before Paper Filing
Paper filing has a few different requirements than e-filing:
- You do not need to enter your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or self-select PIN when paper filing. These items are only used to verify your identity when electronically filing a return.
- You must physically sign and date your paper return before mailing it. An unsigned return may be delayed or rejected by the IRS.
What Documents Should I Include With My Paper Return?
When mailing your return, be sure to include any required supporting documents, such as:
- Copies of Forms W-2 showing federal income tax withholding
- Copies of Forms 1099 that report federal tax withholding
- Any additional forms or schedules generated as part of your tax return
Keep in mind that our software does not generate copies of your original W-2s or 1099s. You'll need to attach copies of those documents before mailing your return.
