If you e-file your tax return, you generally do not need to mail anything to the IRS or your state tax agency. Your return and supporting information are submitted electronically.
However, if you're mailing a paper return, you'll need to include certain forms and documents to help the IRS and your state process your return correctly.
What Do I Need to Send to the IRS?
When mailing your federal tax return, include:
- Your signed Form 1040 and any required schedules and forms included in your tax return PDF
- Copies of all Forms W-2 that show federal income tax withholding
- Copies of any Forms 1099 that show federal tax withholding
- Any other required supporting forms included with your return
You do not need to mail:
- Form 8879 (IRS e-file Signature Authorization)
- Forms or worksheets marked "Keep for Your Records"
Before mailing your return, make sure you sign and date it. Unsigned returns may be delayed or rejected for processing.
What Do I Need to Send to My State?
State requirements vary, but in most cases you should include:
- Your signed state tax return
- A copy of your federal Form 1040
- Copies of your Forms W-2
- Copies of any Forms 1099 that show state or federal tax withholding
If you're filing returns in multiple states and claiming a credit for taxes paid to another state, include a copy of the other state's tax return with your filing when required by your state's instructions.
As with your federal return, be sure to sign and date your state return before mailing it.
