Making a direct payment for the amount owed to the IRS can be a quick and easy process and done through your TaxSlayer account while e-filing your return!
To make a payment while e-filing your return:
Making a payment when you e-file the return is done by using your checking or savings account and direct debiting the account.
- Select E-file (left side menu) and "Yes, I'm done with my return(s) and ready to file"
- In the first box of the "Let's get a few more details" page, select continue to assign the payment for "Direct Debit" or "Mail Payment".
Direct Debit / Electronic Withdrawal
Choose the "Direct Debit" option. When you enter a date for the amount due to be paid you are setting a "first available" option for the IRS to withdraw those funds from your bank account. The date set does not signify the exact date that the funds will be withdrawn for payment and could take some additional time to come out of the bank account that you are assigning. You can only use one bank account for the direct debit payment method.
Mail Payment
Choose "Mail Payment" to mail your payment into the IRS, mail the payment with the payment voucher (automatically generated in the return PDF for your convenience) to the mailing address on the voucher instructions for the IRS to process the payment.
Other Payment options
To make any other payment arrangements, choose the "Mail Payment" option. Other payment arrangements include:
- Directly on the IRS website, the IRS uses third party processors and have a few different ways to make a payment directly to your Federal account. The IRS payment system will accept full and partial payments and payments being made towards a payment plan (including installment agreement) at: https://www.irs.gov/payments. From your Federal account on the IRS website, you have the option to:
- Pay Now: You'll need to confirm your identity before making a payment when using the "Pay now options". The IRS will accept same day payments or scheduling a payment without signing up for an IRS online account.
- Pay from your bank account: The IRS will accept payments from your bank account for "individuals only" and no registration is required when using this method of payment on the website. There are no fees and the IRS accepts scheduling of payments up to a year in advance.
- Pay by debit card, credit card or digital wallet: Individuals and businesses (excluding payroll tax deposits) can make a payment using a Debit card, Credit card or Digital wallet. Processing fees apply.
I want to verify my direct debit payment information:
To verify the payment date and amount selected to pay, log into your account, click on Settings > Transaction History and then scroll down to IRS Payment Information.
How can I change my direct debit payment date or information?
Unfortunately, after your return is accepted you can no longer change your payment information. If you made a mistake when entering your routing/account number or you do not have enough funds available when the withdrawal occurs, the IRS will not be able to withdraw your payment. You are still responsible for paying your taxes, so if something like this happens, we suggest paying on the IRS website to avoid interest/penalties.
