Beginning with amended returns processed in 2023, taxpayers can elect to have their refund sent to them by mailed check or direct deposit. They can elect to pay the amount owed by mailed payment or direct debit.
How do I enter my bank information?
Your bank information will be entered in the e-file process when you electronically file the amended return.
What about my amended state refund?
Since you must paper file your amended state return, your refund will typically be delivered via mailed check. However, some states do allow amended refunds to be direct deposited. When you are in the Amended Return section of your state return, look for a "Direct Deposit" listing to enter your routing and account numbers for direct deposit.
If you do not see an option for direct deposit within the software, check for a line on the printed return to enter your routing and account numbers. If you do not see the option, your state doesn't allow for amended refunds to be direct deposited and will mail your refund to the address on your return.
If you have an amount due, you can pay by mailed payment or by visiting the state website.
What if my direct deposit information is wrong, or I forgot to enter it?
This is no cause for concern. If your banking information is incorrect or was not entered, your amended refund will be mailed to the address on your return.
