You can often update your package yourself using the steps in the guide below. In some situations, though, the system may not allow you to make changes yourself. This usually happens when you delete a form that originally triggered the upgrade. If that occurs and you’re still eligible, our support team can help you make the change.
We still recommend starting with the self‑service steps, as they’re the quickest way to update your package without contacting support.
Downgrading Your Package
How do I change my package?
If you’re eligible, you can manually downgrade your package through Help & Support:
- Make sure you are inside your return (not on the Tax Home screen).
- Select Help & Support.
- Choose “I have a technical question.”
- Scroll down and select “How do I Change My Package?”
- Click on 'Switch Package'.
- Choose the package you wish to switch to by clicking 'Switch'. If the desired package does not show the option to switch, click 'Why can't I switch' to see the reasons you cannot downgrade.
If you’re eligible, you can also contact customer support to request a downgrade.
When can’t I downgrade?
You cannot downgrade if:
- Your package was upgraded because your return requires a form not supported in a lower‑tier package, or
- You used a premium support feature (Live Chat or Ask a Tax Pro). In this case, downgrading from the Premium package is not allowed, or
- Your return has already been e-filed.
How to check for upgrades before e‑filing
- Log in and open your return
- Go to Review > Summary on the left menu
- Select Show details
- Choose Pay Now
If an upgrade occurred, it will be shown here.
Note: Once you have paid your fees, you can no longer view the reason for the upgrade.
Upgrading Your Package
From Free to Classic
You can upgrade your package from Free to Classic by:
- Choosing to itemize deductions, or
- Adding a dependent, or
- Adding a form or tax situation that is not included in the Free Edition. Your package will automatically upgrade from Free to Classic if you add an item or feature not supported in the Free Edition. When this occurs, the system will automatically update your package to the Classic package when you visit the Review screen.
Upgrade to Premium
To upgrade to the Premium package, follow these steps:
- Open your return (you must be inside the return, not on the Tax Home screen).
- In Help & Support, select “I can’t find the form I’m looking for.”
- Next, choose “I need to speak to a representative.”
- You will then see available upgrade options:
- Live Chat
- Ask a Tax Pro
- Select the feature you want and choose Upgrade when prompted.
How Do I Know If My Package Was Upgraded?
Before you purchase or e‑file your return, you will see your filing fees listed:
- During the e‑file process, and
- When viewing your PDF
Select “Why was I upgraded?” to see a detailed list of the items in your return that caused the upgrade.
You can also see your package displayed in the left‑side navigation bar.
Additional Information
- All package changes must be made before purchasing or e‑filing your return.
- After you agree to the fees and complete your purchase or file your return, your package can no longer be adjusted.
